Accomplished director Shyam Benegal has emerged over the past thirty years as the heir to the filmmaking legacy of Satyajit Ray. Both Ray and Benegal are recognized for their use of literary adaptations in realist contexts. Benegal recently completed a biopic of the great Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose. Bose created controversy when he renounced Gandhi’s non-violent teachings in favor of more direct warfare with the British Empire. The film follows his struggles at home as well as his unlikely encounters abroad with Adolf Hitler and the Japanese Army.

This screening will be preceded by the South Asia without Borders Seminar: "Border Crossing Films: A Conversation with Shyam Benegal." The talk begins at 4:00 pm in the Thompson Room, Barker Center, 12 Quincy Street.
