High in the mountains of Taiwan lies the remote village of Smangus. Inhabited by a unique group of indigenous people called the Tayal, Smangus is the only place in Taiwan that now practices common ownership of land and property. This documentary witnesses every part of the lives of these people over the course of one year in the sacred forests of this tribe.

  • Go Grandriders! ((Bu lao ji shi))

    Directed by Hua Tien-hao.
Taiwan, 2012, digital video, color, 80 min.

This documentary follows a group of 17 octogenarians as they prepare for a road trip across Taiwan—on scooters. The trip itself elicits reflections from most of the diverse group on both their individual lives and on Taiwan's turbulent history, from Japanese occupation and civil war on the mainland to martial law and the Cold War, and on to the island's rapid modernization and economic development over the past decades.
