One of Andersen’s first film experiments, Spaghetti Trouble, brought to life the drawings of fellow artist Red Grooms whose cartoonish, exaggerated forms were well suited to animation. Grooms soon directed his own films with Anderson as the cinematographer—and sometimes also an actress, as in the case of the cardboard-cutout live-action extravaganza, Fat Feet. Though some were made before the dawn of Yellow Ball Workshop, these early films carry a similar childlike sensibility and absurd sense of humor, with silent film influences. Animals and inanimate objects take on central roles amidst the din, detritus and diversity of city sights, sounds and crazy characters. Meow Meow has the distinction of featuring the iconic voice of underground filmmaker George Kuchar, who was introduced to Andersen through the experimental film programs she and her husband Dominic Falcone would hold at their gallery. I Saw Their Angry Faces and We Will Live Forever are two of a series of poems by Falcone which Andersen animated in the 70s and 80s.
