A married woman falls in love with a military officer and is banished from home by her powerful husband, who tells her son that she has died. Although Garbo would gain greater critical acclaim for her role in the 1935 version of Tolstoy’s text, this version was one of her biggest commercial successes thanks in part to its memorable tagline: “John Gilbert and Greta Garbo in Love!”
