The Other Final

Directed by Johan Kramer.
Netherlands, 2003, digital video, color, 87 min.
 .

After the Netherlands’ team lost its chance at qualification for the World Cup, Dutch advertising consultant Matthijs de Jongh set up a match between the two lowest ranked teams on FIFA’s world rankings: the Kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayas and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. Documentary filmmaker Johan Kramer filmed the countries’ preparations, structuring the film as a countdown to confrontation. The 2002 match—held on the same day of the World Cup final in Japan and Korea—captured the world’s imagination. The Other Final gives us the inside story of this remarkable meeting.
