Them and Me

Heaven in A Garden

Director in Person
French anthropologist and ethnographic filmmaker Stéphane Breton visits for an evening to present his portraits of life in New Guinea.
As a tribe and its ethnologist meet on the highlands of Guinea, Them and Me inverts the classical approach of ethnographic films to show how the subject sees the person looking at it. The frustrations of the ethnologist and the speculations revolving around him become evident. What unfolds is a documentary not about an exotic or very exotic society but a film that reveals the exoticism of the one who observes.
In the “sequel” to Them and Me, the narrator intimately describes his last trip to the remote country where he used to go regularly, and where circumstances now prevent him from visiting.
