Spotlight on Collections: Robert Flaherty's Oidhche Sheanchais

00:00 / 00:00
Robert Flaherty's Oidhche Sheanchais panel discussion. Speakers include: Catherine McKenna, Natasha Sumner, Haden Guest and Liz Coffey.

Robert Flaherty’s film, Oidhche Sheanchais (A Night of Storytelling), 1935, was presumed lost, until a member of the Harvard Celtic Department discovered a record for it in the library’s online catalog, Hollis, in 2012, which located it in Houghton Library. The short film offers rich opportunities for research in the histories of Irish culture, film, and story-telling.

Please join us for a screening, followed by presentations on the history, preservation, and translation of the earliest known Irish-language film. Speakers include: Catherine McKenna, Chair of the Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures; Natasha Sumner, incoming Assistant Professor in the Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures; Haden Guest, Director of the Harvard Film Archive; and Elizabeth Coffey, Film Conservator at the Harvard Film Archive.
