Like Marie Antoinette, The Bling Ring takes place in a panopticon of adolescence in which seeing and being seen are the defining activities of the protagonists’ lives: however, unlike the doomed queen, these teenagers were not born into notoriety. They may be wealthy, but without fame, they obsess over A-list celebrities—like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and naturally, Kirsten Dunst—and their material possessions, to the point where breaking into their houses feels like the next logical step in such parasocial relationships. Coppola’s characteristic focus on fashion and stylistic detail finds glitzier, more comical expression here, yet fosters the sense of a period study, despite the fact that The Bling Ring was shot less than five years after the events that it depicts.
