The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover filmmaker Peter Greenaway’s rarely seen first feature is a brilliant, Nabokov-like synthesis of narrative and experimental techniques. Greenaway is monumentally ambitious: ninety-two characters, all of whose surnames begin with Fall, are among the nineteen million victims of a catastrophe called "the Violent Unknown Event."
