HFA members admitted free
Screening on Film
Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.
With Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, Jennifer Jason Leigh.
US, 1994, 35mm, color, 111 min.

With a typewriter clacking at her fingertips, a phone cradled against her shoulder, a cigarette dangling from her lips and a Transatlantic accent as sharp as Katharine Hepburn’s, Amy Archer is the Coen Brothers’ homage to the fast-talking dames of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Played with gusto by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Archer is a star reporter who decides to expose the naïve new CEO of Hudsucker Industries and discovers a much larger scheme of corporate fraud. A pastiche of the classic Hollywood screwball, The Hudsucker Proxy registers the power that still resides in the image of the woman at her typewriter.
