Stuff and Dough
(Marfa si banii)

Screening on Film
Directed by Cristi Puiu.
With Alexandru Papadopol, Dragos, Bucur, Ioana Flora.
Romania, 2001, 35mm, color, 93 min.
Romanian with English subtitles.

Puiu’s first film is a wonderfully streamlined and spirited road movie that follows two slackers’ misguided attempt to deliver a bag of “goods” to a Bucharest address. What follows is an alternately harrowing and hilarious adventure in bad luck and frayed nerves that showcases the dead-pan humor and minimalist style which Puiu would brilliantly refine in Lazarescu.

This razor sharp film written and directed by Puiu cuts to the bone with its devastating yet poignant summary of corrupt and nepotistic bureaucracy. Winner of the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival.
