Considered to be one of Naruse's finest films in a decade defined by steady accomplishments, Late Chrysanthemums interweaves several short stories by Hayashi Fumiko into a sprawling tale of post-war disappointment. Though often relegated to the role of a minor player, Sugimura Haruko takes center stage as the haughty Okin, a retired geisha-turned-moneylender who prides herself on being as ruthless in business as a man. Through the repetition of Okin's daily walks through alleys and streets in pursuit of her debtors (specifically her impoverished geisha sisters), Naruse creates a complex map of diverging paths, each defined by the same ambivalence towards the present. – Kelley Dong
