Shot in black-and-white 16mm, Damien Chazelle’s feature film debut fuses John Cassavetes and Jacques Demy in an imaginative reinvention of both the movie musical and American independent cinema. Shooting in Boston and Cambridge with a young cast and crew, Chazelle directed Guy and Madeline as his thesis project for Harvard’s Visual and Environmental Studies program. The film follows the title characters, two twentysomethings in love as the film opens, as they break up and go their separate ways. The jazz score by Justin Hurwitz charmingly captures the personalities of the lead characters with music that immediately recalls Michel Legrand. The Harvard Film Archive is pleased to welcome this film, already acclaimed following screenings at film festivals around the world, back to the place it began for a special screening in advance of its upcoming theatrical release.
